Your Complete Moving Timeline
Moving is one of life's most stressful events, but it doesn't have to be chaotic. The key to a smooth move is starting early and staying organized. This week-by-week checklist covers everything from the moment you decide to move through your first night in your new home. Bookmark this page and check off each item as you go.
4 Weeks Before Moving Day
This is your planning phase. The decisions you make now will determine how stressful (or stress-free) your move will be.
- Book your movers. This is the most important step. Licensed, reputable movers book up fast, especially during summer months in Dallas. Get at least three quotes, verify their TxDMV license, and read reviews. Red Sea Movers offers free quotes with no obligation.
- Create a moving budget. Include movers, packing supplies, deposits, utility setup fees, cleaning costs, and a buffer for unexpected expenses.
- Start decluttering. Go room by room. Donate, sell, or toss anything you haven't used in the past year. The less you move, the less you pay.
- Start collecting packing supplies. Boxes, packing tape, bubble wrap, packing paper, markers, and furniture blankets. Ask local grocery stores and liquor stores for free boxes.
- Begin packing non-essentials. Seasonal clothes, books, decorations, guest room items, and stored items can be packed now.
- Notify your landlord if you're renting. Review your lease for move-out notice requirements (usually 30-60 days).
3 Weeks Before Moving Day
Now it's time to handle the administrative side of your move.
- Set up utilities at your new home. Schedule electricity, gas, water, internet, and trash service to start the day before your move-in date.
- Cancel or transfer utilities at your current home. Schedule disconnection for the day after you move out.
- File a change of address with USPS (usps.com). This forwards your mail for up to 12 months.
- Update your address with your bank, credit cards, insurance, employer, subscriptions, and the DMV.
- Transfer or find new doctors, dentists, and vets. Request copies of medical records.
- Arrange school transfers if you have children. Request transcripts and enrollment paperwork.
- Continue packing. Focus on rooms you use least: guest rooms, storage areas, and the garage.
2 Weeks Before Moving Day
You're in the home stretch of packing. Things should be taking shape.
- Confirm your moving company. Call to verify the date, time, address, and any special instructions. Confirm the crew size and estimated cost.
- Pack room by room. Label every box with the room name and a brief description of contents. Number boxes so you can track them.
- Take photos of electronics setups before disconnecting them. This makes reassembly much easier.
- Dispose of items movers can't transport: paint, aerosols, propane tanks, cleaning chemicals, ammunition, and perishable food.
- Arrange care for pets and children on moving day. The less chaos, the better.
- Plan meals for the last two weeks. Use up freezer and pantry items to reduce what you need to move.
- Reserve the elevator if you're moving from or to an apartment building.
1 Week Before Moving Day
Almost everything should be packed. This week is about final details.
- Pack an essentials box (or suitcase). This stays with you, not on the truck. Include: toiletries, medications, phone chargers, a change of clothes, basic tools, important documents, snacks, water bottles, paper towels, toilet paper, and trash bags.
- Clean out and defrost the refrigerator. Unplug it 24 hours before the move to prevent leaks.
- Disassemble large furniture if possible. Remove table legs, bed frames, and shelving units. Keep hardware in labeled ziplock bags taped to the furniture.
- Do a final walkthrough of your current home to check every closet, cabinet, attic, and storage area.
- Charge all devices and download any offline entertainment for the move.
- Withdraw cash for tipping movers and any last-minute purchases.
Moving Day
The big day is here. Stay calm, stay hydrated, and let the movers do their job.
- Do a final walkthrough of every room, closet, cabinet, and outdoor area before the movers finish loading.
- Protect your floors. Lay down cardboard or old blankets on hardwood and tile at both locations.
- Be available to answer questions. The crew will need to know where things go. Label rooms at your new place with sticky notes so movers can place boxes in the right rooms.
- Check the inventory list when the truck is unloaded. Make sure all numbered boxes are accounted for.
- Take meter readings at both the old and new addresses for utility billing accuracy.
- Tip your movers if they did a great job. $20-$40 per mover for a half-day, $40-$60 for a full day.
- Change the locks at your new home. You never know who has copies of the old keys.
After the Move
- Unpack essentials first: kitchen, bathrooms, and bedrooms.
- Inspect for damage. Check your items and your new home. Report any moving damage to your moving company within 24-48 hours.
- Update your driver's license. Texas law requires updating your address within 30 days of moving.
- Register to vote at your new address.
- Meet your neighbors. A simple introduction goes a long way in building community.
